Fort View Hotel | Basic Accommodation in Fort Portal City

Fort View Hotel is one of the top budget hotels in Fort Portal – located along Kamuhigi road the hotel works well for a budget traveler or backpacker looking for a basic accommodation close to the city. Fort View Hotel is a small accommodation facility with reasonably sized rooms and key amenities for a comfortable stay. The hotel is within walking distance to shops, local markets and shopping centers in Fort Portal central business district.

Fort Portal which recently achieved “tourism city” status is a busy town and close to key attractions. The tourism city welcomes a significant number of visitors each year who are always looking for a base accommodation facility while on safari in Uganda. Attractions that are close to Fort Portal city include Kibale Forest National Park that is well known for the chimpanzee trekking adventure, Queen Elizabeth National Park with its abundant wildlife, Semuliki National Park which is a bird watcher’s haven and Rwenzori Mountains National Park.

Fort View Hotel features 20 rooms in total that are spread out between the ground floor and the first floor. Of these rooms 14 are double rooms, 3 are single rooms and 3 are twin rooms. All the rooms at Fort View Hotel are arranged in the same manner, they only differ on occupancy.

The rooms at Fort View Hotel are basic rooms as it is a budget guest house so do not expect anything fancy.

Facilities and Services

Restaurant – The restaurant situated downstairs features wooden seats with colorful table cloths. The restaurant serves a continental breakfast daily and they switch up the food options often. The breakfast includes eggs, bread, fruit juice, bananas, sausages,potatoes, “Katogo” (a local breakfast meal made with green bananas and sauce), milk tea and black tea. The restaurant also has an a la carte menu that offers chicken dishes, snacks, meat dishes, local food, sandwiches, and cocktail juices. For budget hotels we usually recommend that you order your lunch and dinner in advance to reduce on the waiting times. Most of the budget hotels like Fort View Hotel usually have one on-site chef and few guests so the meals are on request and are made depending on the orders placed. There is usually no pre-cooked food.

Reception and Bar – Fort View Hotel features a reception and bar located downstairs in the same area as the bar. The reception is where you go in case you have any inquiries during your stay. The reception also has a small bar that serves alcoholic drinks, the bar has a limited selection of beer. Soda and water is also available here.

Car Parking Area – Fort View Hotel has a courtyard car parking area right next to the road. The car parking area can accommodate up to 6 cars.

Attractions and Activities

One might wonder what activities to engage in while on a visit to Fort Portal or staying at Fort View Hotel, well there is so much to do because Fort Portal is a tourism city so it has a lot to offer. Below are activities you can consider;

Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale ForestA chimpanzee trek is a great choice for the visitor who would like to come close to these amazing primates. The chimpanzee trekking adventure begins at Kanyanchu visitor centre in Kibale Forest National Park which is 30 minutes away from Fort View Hotel. Your tour operator will arrange the tour for you and have the driver guide pick you up and drop you off at the hotel at the end of the day.

Game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park – The Park is a two and a half hour drive away from Fort Portal and is great for an up close experience with wildlife in the wild. Game drives in the park will have you looking out for lions, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, Elephants, water bucks, spotted hyena, olive baboons and vervet monkeys. Queen Elizabeth National Park is best explored on a 3 Days Wildlife  Safari.

Kasenda Crater Lakes – The crater lakes are located approximately 20-30 km south of Fort Portal. The lakes have stunning views from the top and a hike up to see the crater lakes from the top is worth it. The crater lakes include Lake Nkuruba, Lake Nyabikere, Lake Kifuruka and Lake Nyinambuga. The crater lakes with their very steep walls and forested surroundings offer great photo moments and are best visited on a day tour.

Birding Semuliki National Park – Birding in Uganda is a rewarding activity for the keen birding enthusiast and Semuliki National Park is a top birding destination. Semuliki is mainly visited to look for the 35 Guinea-Congo forest biome bird species which are only found in this park and nowhere else in East Africa. Bird species to look out for in the park while on a birding safari include Yellow-throated cuckoo, Brown-eared woodpecker, White-crested Hornbill, Yellow-throated nicator, Red-Tailed Greenbull, African crake, Abyssinian Ground hornbill, African Dwarf Kingfisher, Marsh tchagra, Leaflove, Congo serpent eagle, Papyrus gonolek, Long-tailed hawk, Black-wattled hornbill, Carruthers’s cisticola, owls, Standard-winged night jars among other species.

Fort Portal City Tour – A 1 day Fort Portal City tour is a great way to explore the town and visit the main attractions within the city. Places that you visit on the day tour include the “Omukama Palace” which is the King’s place, the Empaako monument, two local markets for an experience of the local life, River Mpanga, Gerald Portal monument and have lunch at a local food restaurant.

Tooro Botanical Gardens – A visit to Tooro Botanical Gardens is one of the easiest activities to do while staying at Fort View Hotel. The Botanical gardens are located within Fort Portal in Booma and are a 10 minute drive away from the hotel. On arrival you can take a forest walk through the gardens, and do some birding as you also see different types of trees. Tooro Botanical Gardens is a bio-diversity hub and is one of the largest tree nurseries in Uganda, over 117 indigenous trees are found at the botanical gardens and a variety of plant species.

Another point to note is that Fort View Hotel often gets confused with New Fort View Hotel/Resort, Fort View Hotel is a sister guest house and is located in Fort Portal town however New Fort View Hotel is larger in size and is located on the outskirts of Fort Portal town. You branch off along Fort Portal – Kampala highway. Please also note that Fort View Hotel is a budget facility so you get basic accommodation and amenities that are up to budget standards.
