One of the first things that a visitor to Fort Portal will do is try to find the best places to shop in the town. In this article I share the best places to shop while in Fort Portal. Fort Portal is one of Uganda’s busiest towns and welcomes a significant number of visitors each year.
Visitors to Fort Portal are drawn to the beautiful city by different interests, some are here to visit nearby attractions like Kibale Forest National Park, Amabere ga Nyina Mwiru caves, and Queen Elizabeth National Park. Other visitors visit for work that includes volunteer work in different organizations, while others due to one reason or another choose to settle here permanently. All in all one will find themselves needing things to buy or shop.

Andrew & Brothers Supermarket
Located in the Central Business District is Andrew & Brothers Supermarket, one of the best places to shop while in the town. The supermarket sells a variety of commodities that include toiletries, snacks, frozen foods, imported goods, fruits, wines, spirits, non-alcoholic drinks, local beers, dog food, cat food, pet toys, packed milk, eggs, canned foods, bread, kitchen items, and biscuits among others. The supermarket also sells “Omukaro” which is smoked beef, a local delicacy of the people of Tooro. The supermarket is a one stop center and its central location makes it very easy to find or locate. Andrew & Brothers Supermarket is located on Lugard Road in Fort Portal, they have a big sign so you will definitely not miss it.
Active Supermarket
Active Supermarket is located along Lugard Road and is one of the newest supermarkets in the city. Active Supermarket sells toiletries, snacks, drinks both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, frozen foods, packed milk, fruits like apples, watermelons, kitchen ware, baking essentials like yeast and flour and other items. The supermarket has a bakery inside the supermarket with a section of food items that are sold ready to eat. The food sold includes freshly baked muffins, cakes, samosas, pizza slices (chicken, beef and vegetarian) and baked snacks. Active Supermarket is the best supermarket to buy freshly baked bread as the supermarket has a bakery with a trained chef onsite, the bread will usually be made that very day or a day ago. You can always ask the staff for bread that was made that very day to get the freshest bunch.
