Overview

This 8 day safari will take you gorilla and chimpanzee trekking in Uganda with a mix of game viewing in a savanna national park. You will visit start with Murchison Falls National Park the largest national park in Uganda well known for excellent game viewing and the mighty Murchison Falls. After this you will head to Kibale Forest National Park the prime destination for chimpanzee tracking in Uganda with the biggest population of chimpanzees. You will then head to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park which is home to half of the world’s population of gorillas with 459 individuals as of December 2018. This safari combines wildlife experiences with trekking in Uganda’s forests.

Tour Plan

You will arrive at Entebbe International airport today and you will be met and welcomed to Uganda by your driver guide. The guide will then transfer you to your hotel in Entebbe or Kampala for overnight. Journey time: 15 minutes Accommodation: Hotel No.5 (Luxury), Best western Garden Hotel (Mid-range), African Roots Guest House (Budget) Meal Plan: Dinner
After breakfast at the hotel this morning you start the journey to Murchison Falls National Park. The drive takes you through the small trading centers as you will see locals in these centers going on with their day. You will have a stopover for rhino tracking at Ziwa Rhino sanctuary. The sanctuary hosts 32 white rhinos and you will walk along the trail led by your ranger guide. You will spend 1 hour with the rhinos watching them and taking photos. After this trek you continue with the journey. On arrival at the park you head to the lodge, check in and have dinner. You will leave the lodge as early as 6am for the morning game drive. The game drive will take place in the northern section of Murchison Falls National Park which has a large concentration of the park’s wildlife. Animals to look out for include elephants, giraffes, lion, warthogs, buffaloes, patas monkey, olive baboons, Uganda kobs, water bucks, hyenas and bush bucks. On a lucky day you might have a chance of spotting the leopard. In the afternoon you will head for a boat ride on River Nile at 2:00 pm where you have opportunities to look out animals like crocodiles, hippos, monitor lizards, elephants, antelope species and water birds. The animals usually come to the river to drink water and cool off. The boat ride takes you to the base of the water falls, here you get off the boat and start the hike to the top of the falls. The hike takes about 45 minutes – 1 hour. The top of the falls offer breathtaking views and opportunities to take great photos of the water falls and the vast landscape of the national park. Today you will transfer to Kibale Forest National Park which is also referred to as primate capital of East Africa.The drive to the park offers scenic views of Uganda’s landscape and vegetation. Arrive at the lodge in Kibale, check in and have lunch. After lunch your driver guide will take you to visit the Fort Portal crater lakes located near the park, here you will capture great photos and return to the lodge later for dinner. Journey time: 5 hours Accommodation: Ndali Lodge (Luxury), Turaco Treetops (Mid-range), Chimpanzee Forest Lodge (Budget) Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Have breakfast at the lodge early in the morning and then your driver guide will transfer you to the park headquarters for a briefing from your ranger guide. After the briefing you start the journey in to the rain forest as you look out for the chimpanzees, man’s closest relatives. Once you locate the chimps you will spend one hour with them as you watch then hop around the tree branches, feed, play and feed their young ones. You will also be able to capture great photos. Different species of birds and some monkeys can be seen while on the chimp trek. In the afternoon you will go on the Bigodi wetland walk which is a community run initiative that takes you in to the Bigodi wetlands. Here you will look out for monkey species like black-and-white colobus, red-tailed and red colobus. You will also look out for bird species with the most commonly sighted being the Great Blue turaco. The walk will also take you in to the community to have a look in to the way of life of the locals, their culture and traditions. Return to the lodge after a long day relax and have dinner. Optional Activity: Chimpanzee Habituation Experience(CHEX). The chimpanzee habituation activity is an alternative way to visit the chimpanzees. For this activity you spend up to more time with the chimpanzees as you will set out in to Kibale Forest early in the morning to find the chimps leaving their nests and spend the rest of the day with them. You return to the lodge later in the evening. So for a traveler looking to spend more time with the chimpanzees as opposed to the one hour on the chimpanzee trek, this activity is highly recommended. After your breakfast you then head to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. You will have short breaks along the way to stretch after which you continue with your journey. Optional Activity – Community Tour Journey time: 4 hours Accommodation: Bwindi Lodge (Luxury), Buhoma Haven Lodge (Mid – range), Buhoma Community Rest Camp (Budget) Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
You will leave the lodge as early as 6 am in the morning; the driver guide will take you to the national park main offices. Here you will receive a briefing with clear guide lines about your trek. After the briefing you will be assigned the gorilla family that you will be trekking and then begin your trek in to Bwindi Forest. Once you locate the gorillas you are allowed to spend 1 hour with them. After this you start the trek back. Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
You will end your safari on this day as you travel back, you will have a stopover at the Uganda Equator monument. Your driver guide will then drop you off in Kampala or Entebbe Airport for your flight back home. Journey time: 8 Hours Meal Plan: Breakfast and Lunch
