Overview

Mabira Forest Reserve is a moist semi-deciduous rain forest located along the Kampala-Jinja highway. The forest is rich in bio-diversity with about 312 tree species, plant species, butterfly species and 23 small mammal species. Mabira Forest is also home to the endangered species- the Uganda Mangabey. In terms of birding Mabira forest offers great sightings and is a great option if you are around Uganda for a short time to do some birding before you leave.

Mabira Central Forest Reserve is home to about 315 species of birds with 74 of 144 species of Guinea-Congo Forest Biome.

Tour Plan

The tour starts with pick up from your hotel by our trained birding guide who will be your guide for the day. After brief introductions and a short briefing session as the rest of the information will be relayed along the way. The drive to Mabira Forest Reserve is rather short compared driving time for other destination but it takes you through the small busy town and landscape of Uganda. On arrival at Mabira Forest Reserve you will head to the park headquarters where birding to the forest begins. You the start exploring Mabira Forest Reserve while keenly watching out birds in the forest which include species of the Lake Victoria Basin Biome, forest specials and species of the Afro tropical Highlands Biome. Birding in Mabira is rewarding as it is not a busy tourism spot so a few visitors are in the forest at a time making it a perfect site for birding because it is quiet with not so much activity.
reat Blue Turaco, Forest wood-hoopoe, African Grey parrot, Nahan’s Francolin, Weyns’s weaver, White-spotted Flufftail, Blue-throated roller, African pied hornbill, Black-and-white-casqued Hornbill, Dusky Long-tailed cuckoo, Hawk-eagle, Cassin’s Spine tail, Speckled Tinkerbird, Yellow-spotted Barbet, Yellow-billed Barbet, Red-capped Robin-Chat, Little Greenbul, Hairy-breasted Barbet, Afep Pigeon, Hairy-breasted barbet, White-bellied Kingfisher, Sabine’s Spinetail, Grey Parrot, African shrike Fly-catcher, Red-tailed Bristlebill, Black-shouldered nightjar, Cassin’s Spinetail, Yellow-throated tinkerbird,Little Greenbul, African dwarf kingfisher, Sooty boubou, Honeyguide Greenbul, Brown-eared woodpecker among other species. The grassland trail is one of the trails you will explore while on the trip as it offers great birding opportunities and is filled with several fruiting trees that attract birds to forage. Aside from the bird watching you will look out for tree species as Mabira forest is a haven for gigantic tree species, invertebrates in the forest as well as butterfly species.
