1 Day Karangura Nature Walk Trail Tour
Duration
Overview
This one day tour takes you along a journey hiking through communities that live on Mount Rwenzori and its foothills. It’s an easy hike for expert hikers and can be a bit challenging for first time hikers but is very doable if you pace yourself. The Karangura Nature Trail is a less explored trail in Rwenzori Mountains National Park but offers great hiking opportunities. There is a one day hike that takes you to the Karangura Peak but for this specific trip it will be a hike through the communities and ending up at the beautiful waterfalls along the community trail.
Detailed Itinerary
You will be picked up from your hotel or location in Fort Portal town at 7:30 am by your driver guide. After brief introductions we will start the journey to Kazingo where we will be starting our hike. The drive to Kazingo trading center takes you through the lush landscape of Fort Portal and as you approach Kazingo you will be treated to views of the Rwenzori Mountains, on a sunny day you see them clearly but on misty days they are hard to see clearly.
We arrive at Karangura sub-county local government offices where you meet your guide for the day. This will be the starting point for the community hike, after a safety briefing from the guide you immediately start hiking. The hike takes you through the community so expect to see locals going about their day, others you will meet working in their gardens, others will be stone quarrying which is one of the activities that is a source of income for the people here and others will be grazing goats. The people that live near Rwenzori Mountains National Park are also livestock farmers and they majorly keep goats. You will have an opportunity to stop somewhere along the community hike where you get a panoramic view of the national park, Lake Saka and Fort Portal town further ahead. You will stop here take photos and then continue with the hike.
The hike will then take you to the waterfalls and you will see them from a distance before you approach them. The hike to the waterfalls is steep so you have to be careful as you navigate it to the top. The amazing thing about the waterfalls is you can get to watch them from below without having to hike up. You will have opportunity to take photos here. Time spent at the waterfalls will be 30 minutes. After watching the waterfalls and taking photos we then start the journey back along the same trail that we used coming up and end the journey at Karangura Sub county local government offices. Here you will rest briefly and then your driver guide will drop you off at your hotel in Fort Portal as you end your one day tour.
